BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/ bcr-2014-208184 DESCRIPTION A 45-year-old non-hypertensive woman presented with a foreign body sensation in the throat of 3 months duration. Endoscopic examination showed a pulsating swelling in the right oropharynx with intact oropharyngeal mucosa (video 1). Contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) revealed an aberrant medial course of the right internal carotid artery (ICA) 2 cm long in the lateral pharyngeal space with 3 mm of interspersed soft tissue between ICA and oropharyngeal mucosa (figures 1 and 2). ICA after bifurcation from the common carotid artery extends to the skull base without branching in the neck. 2 It lies posterolateral to the tonsillar fossa approximately 2.5 cm from the mucosal surface. Aberrant ICA is an uncommon variant that accounts for 5% of incidental occurrences in the neck. It has been classified based on its ectopic position or presence of neoplasms. The ectopic variation is commonly seen in the temporal bone and is either tortuous or kinking. A sharp bend denotes kinking whereas curving, elongation, undulation and redundancy denote tortuosity. 3 Aberrant ICA develops either as a congenital deformity or due to degenerative vessel wall changes such as hypertension, fibromuscular dysplasia and atherosclerosis. 3 Patients may be asymptomatic or may present with a foreign body sensation in the throat, dysphagia or change of voice. 3 CECT, contrast MRI or angiography are gold standards in diagnosis. Aberrant ICA can be misdiagnosed as an abscess or a tumour, the manipulation of which can result in torrential uncontrolled haemorrhage. Hence it is absolutely essential for clinicians to be aware of this rare but important clinical variation of ICA.

Numerical Investigations on the Effect of Pulsating Pressure on Improvement of Formability in Hydroforming of Bent Tube by FEM

In this paper, hydroforming process of bent tubes in T-shaped die is studied for pulsating and linear pressure paths by the finite element method. Forming Limit Diagrams (FLDs) and thickness distribution curves are used to investigate the effect of pulsating pressure on hydroforming process. In addition, the obtained numerical results are compared with experimental results of hydroforming of st...

Investigation of Entropy Generation Through the Operation of an Unlooped Pulsating Heat Pipe

In the present study, an unlooped pulating heat pipe has been considered with two liquid slugs and three neighboirng vapor plugs. The governing equations such as momentum, energy and mass equations are solved explicitly except the energy equation of liquid slugs. The aim of the present study is to calculate the entropy generation through the performance of a pulsating heat pipe. Additionally, the...

Dynamic Instability of Visco-SWCNTs Conveying Pulsating Fluid Based on Sinusoidal Surface Couple Stress Theory

In this study, a realistic model for dynamic instability of embedded single-walled nanotubes (SWCNTs) conveying pulsating fluid is presented considering the viscoelastic property of the nanotubes using Kelvin–Voigt model. SWCNTs are placed in longitudinal magnetic fields and modeled by sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory (SSDBT) as well as modified couple stress theory. The effect of slip ...

Investigation of Laminar Pulsating Nanofluid Flow and Heat Transfer in a Rectangular Channel

In this study, two-dimensional pulsating unsteady flow of nanofluid through a rectangular channel with isothermal walls is investigated numerically. The set of resultant algebraic equations is solved simultaneously using SIMPLE algorithm to obtain the velocity and pressure distribution within the channel. The effects of several parameters, such as volume fraction of different nanoparticles, Rey...

A New Pulsating Power Elimination Method for Single-Phase PWM AC/DC Converters with Minimum Voltage and Current Stress

An inherent problem of single-phase rectifiers is the existence of a pulsating portion in the input power, which pulsates at twice the grid frequency. If this pulsating power is transferred to the DC-link, it causes a significant amount of second-order harmonic at the output voltage. Since in many applications, such a high level of DC oscillation is not acceptable, so the pulsating power must b...
